Trafford has dated every pothole fund scheme. Ashley Road in Altrincham is due to start by December; Lloyd Street and Railway Street wait for spring 2027.

Resurfacing of Ashley Road in Altrincham is due to start by the end of the year. It is one of eight Trafford schemes now forecast to start between October and December, paid for from the borough’s £4.99m share of the Greater Manchester pothole fund.

Trafford Council published the full list on Monday 28 September, with a forecast start for every scheme (Trafford Council, 28 September 2026).

That is quicker than the council first said. When it announced the money on 7 September, it said patching would start that month and resurfacing would wait for spring. It named five roads. Now it has named 23 routes and says the resurfacing is “happening now” (Trafford Council, 7 September 2026).

Not everything has moved forward. Railway Street, Lloyd Street, and Market Street and High Street in Altrincham are all forecast for the spring.

How the £4.99m is being spent

The council has split the money three ways:

  • £3.965m for full resurfacing on 23 priority routes.
  • £525,000 for local patching repairs over the next five months.
  • £500,000 for surface treatments, to be carried out in spring 2027.

The locations for the surface treatments will be published once the council’s 2027/28 highways capital programme is finalised in the new year.

The first scheme is already finished. The A56 Chester Road at junction 7 of the M60, in Stretford, is marked complete.

When each road is due

The council’s programme page gives each scheme a forecast quarter. It counts quarters on its financial year, which starts in April. The same page puts surface treatments in “Q1 of the 2027/28 financial year”, and the council’s announcement calls that spring 2027. So:

  • Q3 means October to December 2026.
  • Q4 means January to March 2027.
  • Q1 2027/28 means April to June 2027.

Read “sections” carefully

Many of the entries say “sections” or “sub-sections”. On those roads the council is not promising the whole length. It has not published which stretches will be done.

The council also says every extent is indicative. Schemes can be adjusted as they are designed and costed. “In rare cases” they can be postponed or deferred, for example if a utility company needs to dig up the same road.

Harboro Road in Sale shows how close this runs. Trafford Council’s own permit closes the road from 28 September to 2 October for highway improvement works (GM road works register). The permit does not say which scheme the work belongs to.

Patching first

The patching budget is separate from these schemes. Patching means cutting out and replacing small sections of failing surface, so gangs stop returning to the same hole. The council says it began in September and runs for about five months (Trafford Council: Greater Manchester Pothole Fund).

It has not published a list of patching locations.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, the council’s executive member for highways, said the teams were “now working to design, plan and deliver resurfacing in the 23 locations”.

What it means for you

If you live on or use Ashley Road, Canal Road, Green Walk, Langham Road or Norris Road, the forecast start is before the new year. The council says properties and businesses affected by its highway schemes are told before work starts (Trafford Council: highway improvement programme).

We will add each Altrincham-area scheme to our roadworks and travel page once a permit appears on the register.

If your road is in the spring group, nothing has changed except the paperwork. If a pothole near you is not on any list, report it to the council.
